Atlantic Richfield to Begin Grove Gulch Sedimentation Bay Construction

Aug 2, 2024

What is happening? Atlantic Richfield is starting construction at the Grove Gulch project site immediately south of I-90, east of Lexington Avenue. This work is being conducted in accordance with the Butte Priority Soils Operable Unit (BPSOU) Consent Decree (EPA 2020).

Work at the project site will include construction of a stormwater basin that will help remove contaminated sediments from Grove Gulch Creek. Additional site features will include an access drive from Lexington Avenue, a stormwater diversion structure and detention pond, and a vegetated swale. Landscaping will include natural rock retaining walls and planting of numerous trees and shrubs.

When is this happening? Initial site preparation began in mid-July, and construction is scheduled to begin the week of August 5th. Most of the work at Grove Gulch is expected to conclude by December, with some completion work expected to be conducted in the spring of 2025.

Where will contaminated soils be taken? All contaminated soils from the site will be transported to the Butte Reductions Works and stored there prior to being disposed of at an EPA-approved repository location at a future date.

Should I expect any impacts in my neighborhood? Please be aware of increased traffic in the area, including haul trucks, construction equipment, and light-duty vehicles. Temporary closures of sidewalks may occur, and necessary traffic control may result in delays and detours on Lexington Avenue. Atlantic Richfield Company and our contractors appreciate your understanding and cooperation with traffic control signage and markings.

Will the project area be monitored for dust? The contractor will use water to suppress dust at the project site. Air quality will be monitored in accordance with an Air Monitoring Plan, reviewed and approved by EPA, in consultation with DEQ.

Who is doing the work? Jacobs, Wasley Excavating, Jay Fortune Construction, and other contractors will perform the work on behalf of Atlantic Richfield. This project is being conducted in coordination with Butte-Silver Bow, under the oversight of EPA.
